Dolphins are opportunistic feeders which means they eat fish and other animals sharing their homes. Bottlenose dolphins are found worldwide so the type of prey that they hunt is dependent on what season it is and where these dolphins reside.

Dolphins tend to eat about 5 percent of its own body weight per day while a nursing mother will eat closer to 8 percent.

Their diet consists of mullets, mackerel, catfish, jellyfish and krill while others will also prey on salmon, squid and shrimp, dolphins rarely chew their food instead they swallow their food whole and larger fish end up being shaken to bits.

In different regions bottlenose dolphins eat salmon in the summer and in winter eat herring and mackerel when salmon is a lot more scarce. Although other types of dolphins eat sea birds, sea lions and even other dolphins.
